Jauns Kremļa propagandas «šedevrs»

http://www2.la.lv/lat/latvijas_avize/jaunakaja_numura/latvijas.zinas/?doc=68909

To “izpētījis” prokremliskais “Demokrātijas un sadarbības institūts”, ko vada bijusī Krievijas Valsts domes deputāte Natālija Naročņicka.

Tā sauktā “Demokrātijas un sadarbības institūta” Parīzes filiāle vakar Briselē prezentēja pētījumu “Izdzīvošanas iespējas: minoritāšu tiesības Igaunijā un Latvijā”, ar pretenziju, ka tajā it kā esot analizētā cilvēktiesību situācija minētajās Baltijas valstīs. Pētījums pieteikts skaļi: ar institūta pētījumu daļas vadītāja Džona Lāflanda rakstu izdevumā “The Brussels Journal”.

Lāflands uzdod jautājumu: kāpēc starptautiskā sabiedrība Baltijas valstīm “visu to” ļauj darīt?

Laughland should be booted from the Brussels Journal.

Submitted by Fellow Peacekeeper on Fri, 2009-12-04 15:58.

This is an astoundingly rubbish article which shames the otherwise fine Brussels Journal site. It is full of factual inaccuracies (or *lies* if Mr Laughland is aware of those inaccuracies)

“They had enjoyed a brief period of independence between the wars, as a result of the humiliating peace forced on a defeated Russia…” Apparently the 1919-20 years of fierce fighting for independence doesn’t count for Mr Laughland, he makes it sound like the Baltics recieved independence like kids receiving bonbons at the frivolous behest of Germany…

“…anti-Russian rhetoric in Latvia is often overtly anti-Semitic too.” Certainly not by any reputable person or party. Note that Laughland posts a link to Stormfront … STORMFRONT! dammit .. as proof for this!

“incorporation into the USSR in 1944 was therefore not … an act of naked Russian aggression”
1944? Let us try the invasion, occupation, rigged “elections”, murders, deportations and annexation in 1940. So where does he get 1944 – Liberation from the nazis perhaps? Even the Russians are embarrassed to trot that fiction out in public Laughland.

“Their purpose is to gerrymander the electoral map in order to maintain an elite in power.”
You mean, Latvians think that Latvia should be ruled by Latvians?

“the “imperialism” of pre-revolutionary Russia was imperialism only in name.” and
“The Russian empire was not built on the colonial subjugation of foreign peoples…” An utterly astounding set of sentances…

“But it is much a lie to say that these countries were occupied as it would be to say that Flanders is currently “occupied” by Belgium.” Just plain stupid. Laughland has twisted the notion of occupation into a pretzel. Tanks, barbed wire, deportations, show trials, extrajudicial murders and massacres, Kolyma and the KGB.

“…clear policy of discrimination – and against a well-established historical community…”
Fact : Ethnic Russians who were citizens of Latvia 1920-39, as well as their descendents, are virtually all enfranchised citizens. Any Russians born in Latvia post 1940 can become citizens with a few simple steps – the bar for citizenship is much lower than Germany for instance.

I can go on and on about this. Almost every other sentance is incorrect in details and in context, Laughland consistently demonstrably misrepresents the facts of the situation. That is not the same as making a differing analysis and drawing debatable conclusions. He is either grossly misinformed or a liar.

Who is Laughland?? He consistently takes the Russian propaganda bs line, its as if he gets his whole schtik from “Russia Today” – anti Baltic, anti Orange revolution (ie anti-Ukrainian), anti Rose revolution (ie anti-Georgian), pro-Milosevic, pro-Lukashenko.

Laughland may be euroskeptic, but otherwise he is a clown. For the sake of its credibility Brussels Journal should disassociate itself from him.

Heath was Right about Laughlandsky

Laughland is parroting the most baseless Russian and Soviet propaganda.  I could blog for days about how disgusted I am by his malicious attacks on the Baltic peoples.  His article is, in the words of Sir Edward Heath, “Preposterous…a hideous distortion of both past and present.”

Is Laughland warming his bed with a Russian?  Perhaps the incomparably unbiased Rogozin?  Only pillowtalk about the ungrateful, fascist, anti–Semitic and America–phile Balts and Poles could give Laughland’s vitriol that visceral quality that makes one imagine him screwing up his face with rage as he pounds out his next smear on a laptop.

Marc Frans will note my conviction that Russia is a strategic partner in the clash with Islam.  However, Laughland is sanitizing history and degrading whole peoples, despite the reputation that the Russian people have amongst tens of millions of Europeans!  Laughland’s comments are even insulting to this people themselves, as the Russians have always been the worse off for their governments, irrespective of the territorial ambitions of their Czars and First or General Secretaries.

He is reminiscent of white men who end up marrying orientals and then go about announcing the synergies between East Asia and the West.

Flanders is currently occupied by Belgium.

This is the truth. Or were the Flems ever asked their opinion in a democratic way?

Deranged # 2

Submitted by marcfrans on Thu, 2009-12-03 19:34.

Indeed, deranged is the appropriate word, and not for the first time…  It may well be that Baltic independence “serves a geopolitical purpose”, but so do Laughland’s articles.

This article suffers from schizophrenia.  It starts off promisingly with complaints about the tendency of contemporary Western European ‘elites’  of ignoring the wishes of “the mass of the population” as illustrated with the quote from a French radical socialist (and her ever-expanding view of “human rights”, while ignoring real human INDIVIDUAL rights). But then it lurches into a lengthy defense of the past “incorporation” of peoples into authocratic/totalitarian Russian/Soviet empires (in both the distant and in the not-so-distant past).

As always, Laughland’s reflexive anti-Americanism rises eventually to the surface. “Only the United States benefits” he claims, from Baltic independence! Really? Not the baltic people themselves? They would benefit from inclusion in authoritarian Putistan? And what about the East Europeans? Have they been threathened (and occupied) in recent memory by the Unites States, or was it by… ? And what about Europe? Does that benefit from a revanchist strong Russia, or from a contained Russia? These are all simple questions, but Laughland does not seem to ask them to himself.

None of this is to deny that there may be serious and legitimate questions about “human rights” problems for Russian minorities in the Baltic states. The relevant question is this: were can human rights problems realistically best be addressed, in the free (for now) West or in Putistan? It is incomprehensible how a 21st century Brit could argue for the latter. It is as if the experiences from the past century count for nothing to him.

They were not occupied

Submitted by traveller on Thu, 2009-12-03 16:45.

they were “incorporated”.
Reminds me of the Polish officers in Katyn, they were probably neckshotterated.
Mr Laughland, your whole article smells of submission to the Russian propaganda. Unfortunately for you, we Flemish, “incorporated” in Belgium became immune to “incorporation” propaganda.

Deranged article from Laughland

Submitted by Kenneth Charles Simmonds on Thu, 2009-12-03 14:18.

Laughland skims over the facts that Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians have their own languages, which are not even Slavic, that they are a different religion to Russians and they even use a different alphabet.
He airbrushes also out the fact that the presence of a substantial Russian minorities in the 3 countries is due in part to a deliberate policy of Russification in the period immediately following the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact in 1940-41 and between 1944 and 1990. In the case of Latvia the prewar population was 77% Latvian, by 1989 this proportion had fallen to 52%. This russification took the form of a deliberate extermination of the indigenous intelligentsia and the wholesale import of a Russian speaking proletariat (cf. China’s policies in Tibet or Indonesia’s in West Irian/E.Timor)
